CYBERJAYA: EXERCISING her rights as a citizen to support a political party of her choice, in this case Barisan Nasional, has resulted in death and rape threats on her Facebook page instead.
The victim, who ia a member of the Malaysian Youth Rights Movement, had gone to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) yesterday to lodge a report.
She was accompanied by the movement head Shen Yee Aun, who said the girl is in her early twenties.
Shen said the girl had shown her support for the ruling coalition via a video to rebut a parody video posted by the opposition on the issue of changing leadership.
Since then, the victim has been the subject of torment.
The girl declined to talk and have her picture taken by the media as she feared for her safety.
Shen said the report made to the MCMC was on the basis of cyber bullying which also contained the elements of threats.
He said the abusive comments were posted on the victim's FB profile and the video she acted in was shared in several pro-opposition pages.
He claimed the opposition's cyber troopers could have played a role in the matter.
"She has received more than a thousand lewd and vulgar comments for being in the video that shows support for BN.
"Her life has been threatened and they even threatened to rape her," he told reporters yesterday.
Shen added that a report would also be lodged with the police today as the girl fears for her safety.
Refusing to divulge further details on the victim for safety reasons, Shen expressed hope that the commission would take action to weed out the alleged opposition cyber troopers.
At the same time, Shen wanted the commission to look into the defamatory comments that had been posted on his movement's page on Facebook.
"We are a non-governmental organisation (NGO) movement that is politically neutral for the youths and I don't see why these cyber troopers need to insult or post unnecessary comments on the page," he said.
He also sought MCMC to look into edited photos of political leaders especially those of MCA which insinuated insults.
Shen added that such attitude should not be encouraged and stopped as it could defile the maturity of youngsters in the nation.
